Phyllis GibbsPhyllis Gibbs

Certified Decorative Artist

“I have been a decorative painter now for about 35 years, and have been teaching for 33 of those years! Since first painting Priscilla’s Strawberries those many years ago, I never would have guessed the journey that decorative painting would take me on and the lasting friendships I have made.”

Phyllis is a long time member of Heart of Ohio Tole Chapter and the Society of Decorative Painters. She has served her Chapter in the capacity of President a total of 4 years, as well as Recording Secretary and Trustee. For the Chapter’s Convention Committee, has served as chair of various Committees and Teacher. She was elected, this year, to serve on the SDP’s Nominating Committee. Phyllis also works 4 days a week at a law office in the German Village area of Columbus.

Teaching decorative painting, on both a local and national level, her travels have taken her to Japan 5 times where she has taught in Tokyo, Osaka and Saporro and also Canada. She has painted ornaments for the Blue Room White House Christmas Tree, the Library of Congress tree and the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian. While serving as a Board Member of the Society of Decorative Painters, she was asked to paint a tray for a member of the White House Staff during President Clinton’s administration, which was a real honor.

Phyllis enjoys painting in Oils and recently has taken up fabric painting. Her favorite teachers have been Ann Kingslan and Mary Jo Leisure, and of course Joan Johnson.

This year, she will be in charge of the SDP Foundation Quilt for the fourth year which is a fundraiser benefiting the Foundation’s Permanent Collection of Artwork and Scholarship Fund.  She also worked with the American Cancer Society and single handedly painted a Tribute Quilt which garnered $5,000 for Cancer Research. This quilt will be hung in the San Francisco Bay area offices of the ACS.

This year, currently serving as Chair of HOOT’S Publicity Program, she spearheaded a program, involving many of our Chapter members, painting flower pots for the Plant Pride on Parsons Avenue Project.  One of the highlights for her was getting to speak at Mayor Michael B. Coleman’s Press Conference about our Chapter’s involvement.   More information about this program can be found elsewhere on this website.

Phyllis hopes to start teaching in her home studio this fall. For anyone interested in classes, she can be contacted at: phylcda@aol.com
