HOOT
Spotlights... Sisters:
Lois Dodderer and Dee Betts
(The second in our series combining our 2012 Convention Theme:
"U TouCan Paint"
with our Featured Artists)
Tell us a
little bit about
yourself.
Dee:I
graduated
from Cardington High School and I worked different jobs and then title
insurance business insuring real
estate for 36 years. I
retired
in December 2008. I don’t like
retirement……..
I LOVE it. I also enjoy reading and taking care of the 2
acres I
live on.
Lois:
I
graduated from Cardington High
School and
Columbus Business University. I was employed at Boeing
(Rockwell
International) for 37 years before retiring in 1996. David
and I
have been married for 48 years. We have a daughter Debbie and
son-in-law Jeremy and have 3 grandchildren Travis, Tori and
Mason. My sister is Dee. I enjoy my
grandchildren’s
visits.
When
did you get interested in crafts not necessarily painting?
Dee: In
the late 80’s Sister and I
did craft
shows in the fall but no painting was involved at that time.
I
guess I’ve always been creative and crafty but
didn’t know
my right hand could make a paint brush work.
Lois: Sister
Dee and I had a craft
business which we
named Sisters Forever. We had a lot of fun making crafts and
going to craft shows. I actually started my painting with my
friend in Tulsa making ceramic chili peppers. We attended
several
of the craft shows at Chili Cook-Offs around Oklahoma and Texas.
How
did you learn about HOOT and when did you join?
Dee:Sister
taught me to paint on a
T-shirt and then
she took an oil class in 1999 of peonies in a ball jar from Robert
Warren and I wanted to paint that so I went directly into
oils. I
liked it so well I painted 2 more for gifts. My first real
class
was in 2000 and it was a Santa on an antique ironing board. I
was
a nervous wreck, but I was hooked. Sister told me about HOOT
and
I helped load and unload the truck plus wrapped tables at convention
for 2 years before I joined HOOT in December 2001. (Dah
wasn’t I dumb…)
Lois:I joined SDP in 1995 and
joined HOOT
in May
1996. I heard about HOOT in Tulsa, OK. My teacher
said,
“if you are from Columbus you should join
HOOT”. Of
course, I said, “what is HOOT ?” When I
retired and
returned home, the first thing I inquired about was HOOT !!!!
And
now you know the rest of the story.
What
are your favorite mediums and projects to paint?
Dee: Painting
in oils is my
favorite medium
because I like
to “putz”. I also do acrylics,
watercolor, pastels,
etc. etc. etc. I paint on any surface and of course
I’ve
got plenty to pick from but had to buy more at convention plus a few
brushes I didn’t know I needed. Since retirement I
have
painted several cases of Memory Boxes for our Memory Box program.
Lois:
I also started
with acrylics and took classes with Maureen McNaughton, Judy Diephouse,
and Lynn Deptula. Then I moved on to oil,
and now this year at our
Hoot
Convention took a water color class. I also love to paint on fabric.
Have
you been involved
with
any special projects or offices for HOOT?
Dee: I was on the Board for
the Chapter
for 2 years
as Membership and on the Art from the Heart committee. I have
held numerous positions for the Convention Committee which were Signs,
Volunteer Coordinator, Registration, Banquet, Art Show and Assistant to
the Convention Chair for 1 year. Also I volunteered at SDP
conventions.
Lois:
The
HOOT Chapter offices held were
Sunshine,
Traveling Exhibit, Art from the Heart, First Vice President.
The
Convention Committee offices are Assistant Monitor, Assistant Teacher,
Worker Coordinator/Hospitality, Assistant Convention Co-chair,
Registration, Banquet, Art Show and also volunteered at SDP conventions.
Sum
it all up!
Dee:I can’t believe
since 2001
when I joined
HOOT how much I’ve enjoyed making memories, friendships,
taking
advantage of the seminars, continuing education courses plus the
chapter meeting classes that HOOT offers. I’m
amazed how
much I’ve grown (in painting and in other
ways…smile) and
even won some ribbons at the Ohio State Fair, Convention Art Show and
at the Chapter meeting Art Show.
Lois:I’m
so glad I stopped at
Michael’s
in Tulsa, OK and they were having class registration. I
signed up
to take classes and loved every minute of it. It has become a
favorite hobby and pastime and keeps me out of trouble.
Ha!
I have met some wonderful friends at HOOT and SDP. I feel
honored
to have had the opportunity to take classes with many well known
teachers. I have entered my art work at the Ohio State Fair,
HOOT
Art Show at Convention, and the HOOT Chapter Art Show and even won some
prizes. Dee and I have displayed our art work at the Grove
City
Library last year. We will be displaying in the Pickerington
Library November and December 2011.
