I
was born in 1933 (77 years old now).
I have always sang and
painted and I draw most of my own patterns. After I graduated from
college, I got married and had 3 children.
During that time I also worked for 3 different craft
suppliers.
Ginny Wise and I opened a small full service craft shop, “The
Wise Owl Craft Shoppe”, and taught many classes in all kinds
of arts and crafts. We also had several tole painting classes
each week. We had a consignment area and took in a lot of
finished items to sell. After about 3 years, Ginny and her
husband retired and wanted to travel. I had 3 teenagers of my
own who needed me more at home, so we sold out and closed the store.
Before we closed the shop, we decided to look into starting a chapter
with our National Society. We called the Society and found
out that a group in Gahanna was also interested in forming a chapter
(Thelma Hulet’s ceramic shop). We contacted Thelma
and decided to go together to form a chapter. We had about 20
people from both groups and started meeting in 1975. We got our
affiliation in 1976 in St. Louis.
Forming the chapter is the best thing we ever did. I have
been President, Newsletter Editor, 1st and 2nd Vice President, Trustee,
and several other offices on the Board. I was also convention chairman
3 times and had all kinds of chairmanships on the convention committee.
I paint in oils,
acrylics, watercolor, and
colored pencil. My
best work is stroke work including Rosemaling and Pennsylvania Dutch. I
love painting animals, santas, snowmen, and theorems. Lately,
I have been painting a lot of gourds.
I
hope Heart of Ohio Tole Chapter
never disbands. Belonging
to the organization is a lot of fun and I have made so many friends
throughout the years. It is a delight for me to tell someone
that I was one of the founders of our chapter.
